There is a door at the base of this mushroom, and that is all a child needs to know. It opens on a hand-stitched edge to reveal a hollow inside, a room standing empty until someone is chosen to live there.

The mushroom is felted from wool by hand, the cap in soft browns and greens with a scatter of white, the stem a quiet cream. A fine wire frame is worked into the doorway, which keeps the whole thing standing upright and gives the little door something firm to open and close against. These are browns and greens rather than the bright red toadstool, the mushroom you picture at the foot of a tree on the forest floor, the one a beetle or a fairy might move into without anyone noticing.

It is light enough to carry from room to room and sturdy enough to stay in one spot for years. Nothing about it needs explaining. A child sees a mushroom with a door and already knows what to do.

Why it lasts.

We carry this because a mushroom with a door is a complete idea on its own. Something lives inside, the door opens, and the child decides who. The brown version is the woodland one, quieter than the bright red, the mushroom you would find at the foot of a tree. This is the kind of thing a child keeps in play for years rather than a season.

Who it's for

For the parent
A felt mushroom with a hollow interior and a working door. Sized to fit most small woodland figurines; sturdy enough that it does not need to be handled carefully. The brown cap reads well in both nature-themed and general small-world setups.
For the educator
A self-contained small-world home: hollow interior, opening door, and a stable base. Works as a standalone prop or as an anchor for a woodland scene. The simple shape reads clearly and invites immediate engagement.
For the gift-giver
A mushroom with a door: a concept that works for almost every child who encounters one. The brown cap is the quieter colorway; it suits children who tend toward naturalistic play and pairs beautifully with the Red Mushroom Hideaway.

Details

Materials & construction

Each piece is made from 100% natural sheep's wool, sourced directly from Australia and New Zealand for its quality and purity. The wool is tested to the CE standard and colored with non-toxic, child-safe dyes. No synthetic binders, adhesives, plastics, or formaldehydes are used at any stage. The fibers are bound entirely through hand-felting: layers of wool pressed in warm, soapy water until the natural barbs lock permanently into a dense, resilient sheet. Every finished piece is hand-sewn without molds or machines.

Himalayan Felt Co. was founded by Lobsang and Miranda, who began traveling to Nepal to import felt and eventually opened their own dedicated factory there. Every piece is made by local Nepalese women, employed directly by the company: taught traditional felt-making skills, given a safe and family-friendly place to work, and paid a fair wage. Himalayan Felt Co. toys are CE marked and tested to the European toy safety standard, EN71. Because every piece is made by hand, slight variation in shape and color is natural and expected.

Ways to play

Open the door and choose who lives inside: a gnome, a mouse, a tiny hedgehog, a fairy. Build a forest floor scene around the base with moss, acorns, or felt stones. Pair with the Felt Mushroom Hideaway, Red for a woodland village, each with its own resident. Add Felt Bees, 3 pcs or a Felt Ladybug to the scene for seasonal detail.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a lightly damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Do not submerge in water, machine wash, or wring: the hand-felted fibers will shrink and lose their shape permanently if saturated. Air dry flat, away from direct heat and sunlight. Store in a dry place. Natural dyes may mellow gently over years of use; this is a characteristic of the material, not a defect.
