A hobbit hollow with a round opening door, set into a felt garden mat hand-sewn with toadstools and wildflowers. A felt canopy rises behind it to frame the whole scene. Unroll it, set the hollow upright, and the world is already there: a home, a garden, and a sky above it, all in one piece, with nothing to assemble and nothing to arrange before play can begin.

The door opens and closes. A wire frame inside the hollow keeps it shaped and lets children bend and reshape it as they play. The mat is soft enough to sit on and substantial enough to be walked on. Small figurines, gnomes, fairies, hedgehogs, woodland animals: they all belong on it, and children tend to populate it immediately and thoroughly. One of the most fully realized felt playscapes we carry, and the kind of thing that earns a permanent place in a playroom and gets played with differently every year.

Why it lasts.

We carry this because the world is already built when a child first touches it. The hollow has a door, a window, and a curved roof. The garden mat has a path, a flower bed, and a border of grass. A child does not have to construct anything or decide what kind of world this is. It is a home, clearly, and the only question is who lives there and who is coming to visit. That settled quality is rare. Most imaginative play structures ask a child to arrange, assemble, or imagine their way into a world. This one begins the story for them.

Who it's for

For the parent
Felt home, garden mat, and canopy in a single piece, so there is nothing to assemble and no loose parts to lose. The hand-sewn toadstools and flowers give children a complete starting point without dictating where the story goes. It rolls up for storage and holds up to daily, years-long play.
For the educator
A ready-made small-world station. Unroll it on a table or carpet and it anchors a literacy corner, a storytelling prompt, or free imaginative play with no setup. The clear home-and-garden setting invites children to narrate who lives there, sequence events, and build vocabulary around a scene they can see and touch.
For the gift-giver
It looks like something the moment it leaves the box: a standing hollow with a door that really opens, set in a garden that has already been planted. Nothing needs adding before a child is absorbed in it, and the felt is sturdy enough that the same gift is still in play years later.

Details

Materials & construction

Each piece is made from 100% natural sheep's wool, sourced directly from Australia and New Zealand for its quality and purity. The wool is tested to the CE standard and colored with non-toxic, child-safe dyes. No synthetic binders, adhesives, plastics, or formaldehydes are used at any stage. The fibers are bound entirely through hand-felting: layers of wool pressed in warm, soapy water until the natural barbs lock permanently into a dense, resilient sheet. Every finished piece is hand-sewn without molds or machines.

Himalayan Felt Co. was founded by Lobsang and Miranda, who began traveling to Nepal to import felt and eventually opened their own dedicated factory there. Every piece is made by local Nepalese women, employed directly by the company: taught traditional felt-making skills, given a safe and family-friendly place to work, and paid a fair wage. Himalayan Felt Co. toys are CE marked and tested to the European toy safety standard, EN71. Because every piece is made by hand, slight variation in shape and color is natural and expected.

Ways to play

Unroll the mat, set the hollow upright, and populate the garden path with woodland figurines, gnomes, or fairies. Explore who lives in the hollow, who walks the path, and what grows in the garden. Tuck a pair of small figurines inside for a sleeping scene. The Papoose Gnome Family, Set of 4 is the natural choice for residents: four gnomes at exactly the right scale for the world the mat creates.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a lightly damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Do not submerge in water, machine wash, or wring: the hand-felted fibers will shrink and lose their shape permanently if saturated. Air dry flat, away from direct heat and sunlight. Store in a dry place. Natural dyes may mellow gently over years of use; this is a characteristic of the material, not a defect.
