A real balance to tip and true. Pile apples on one side, weights on the other, and watch the beam swing until it settles. This solid wooden scale turns weighing into a game a child plays again and again.

It belongs on the shop counter, in the play kitchen, or at a table all its own, wherever someone needs to find out which is heavier. Load it, balance it, and trade.

Why it lasts.

Drewart works in alder, a close-grained European hardwood, finished with natural linseed oil and left unvarnished. A balance that gets loaded and swung all day has to move smoothly and stay solid, and this one is built to do both. Each scale is hand-shaped, so the grain and finish vary slightly, and it holds up to years of weighing and trading.

Who it's for

For the parent
At home it gives weighing a place to happen, on the shop counter, in the kitchen, or anywhere a child wants to compare two handfuls. It builds an early sense of heavier and lighter, balance, and fair trade through play, with no screen and no batteries. Solid, simple, and quietly mathematical.
For the educator
In the classroom it anchors a math or discovery station where children compare weights, balance both sides, and talk through heavier, lighter, and equal. It pairs naturally with a shop or market setup for hands-on number sense, and it is built for daily handling.
For the gift-giver
It is the gift that slips quiet learning into play, a beautiful wooden balance that doubles as shop equipment and a math toy. Solid, simple, and open-ended. It suits the family that values wooden, lasting things and the child who loves to sort, weigh, and trade.

Ways to play.

Load one side, balance the other, and see which way the beam tips. Weigh the play food for the shop, trade until both sides are even, and call out which is heavier. Set up a market, price by weight, and let the customers line up.

Pairs with the Drewart Cash Register and the Drewart Playstand and Playshop.

Details

Materials & construction

The Drewart Scale is made from alder, a close-grained European hardwood chosen for its strength and smooth finish. It is coated with natural linseed oil rather than varnish and left unvarnished, so it keeps its natural grain and can be re-oiled over the years.

Drewart has worked in wood for more than forty years, crafting its toys in Poland. Every piece is hand-shaped, so the grain, knots, and finish vary slightly from one to the next. Drewart toys are CE marked, tested to the European toy safety standard EN 71, and made from FSC-certified wood from responsibly managed forests.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry or barely damp cloth, then dry it right away. Do not soak the wood or leave it sitting in water, since standing moisture can raise the grain or loosen a joint over time. If the wood ever looks dry or pale, rub in a little food-safe oil, such as linseed or a board oil, and buff off the excess. Store it somewhere dry and out of direct sun or a hot radiator, which can fade or crack natural wood. Small marks and a softening patina are normal on an oiled, unvarnished toy and are part of how it ages.
