Age Recommendations

This set is recommended for children ages 3 to 6 years.

Why it lasts.

We carry this set because it is one of the most complete book-plus-toy experiences we have found. The puppets follow the book directly, which means children who love the story have characters to hold, and children who come to the puppets first will want the book. Sarah Allen's illustrations and the precision of the felt work are genuinely well-matched. This is a set we love recommending for nature-curious children and for anyone who believes in the connection between books and play.

Who it's for

For the parent
Five insects from the book, now in your child's hands. After reading Ingenious Insects together, children put on each puppet as you name the species and move through the story again. The set turns a reading session into a puppet show, and then into open play. The puppets are precise enough to hold a child's attention well beyond the book.
For the educator
A structured tool for entomology and nature literacy units. Each puppet corresponds to a species covered in the book: swallowtail butterfly, cicada, rhinoceros beetle, caterpillar, and shiny jewel beetle. Use for interactive read-aloud, character sequencing, or student-led puppet presentations. Pairs with the Finger Puppet Stand, 7 Rods for display between sessions.
For the gift-giver
A book-and-puppet set that arrives as a complete gift, nothing else needed. Sarah Allen's illustrations are award quality, and the five felted insects match them closely enough to delight a detail-oriented child. The kind of set that gets kept on a shelf long after the puppets stop being worn.

Details

Materials & construction

Each piece is crafted from 100% New Zealand wool felt, sourced from GOTS-certified farms. The wool is colored with azo-free, non-toxic dyes and verified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Every component, including structural threads and dyes, is cleared of over 100 harmful substances. The finished pieces contain no plastic, no batteries, and no synthetic fill.

These pieces are made in Kathmandu, Nepal, by a cooperative of over 350 women artisans, the majority of whom are mothers. Each is shaped through traditional needle-felting and wet-felting, without molds or machines. The cooperative holds Fair Trade USA certification, ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions. Your purchase directly supports the economic independence of the women who made it.

Ways to play

Read the book aloud and bring each insect to life with its puppet as it appears on the page. Use the puppets independently for insect drama, metamorphosis sequencing, and nature storytelling outside the book. Return to the book across multiple sessions, letting children lead the puppet performance as they grow more familiar with the story.

Pairs with the Finger Puppet Stand, 5 Rods or Finger Puppet Stand, 7 Rods for display between sessions.

Care & storage

Spot-clean the puppets with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not submerge or machine wash. Air dry flat. Store the puppets in the box or a small pouch alongside the book to keep the set together between sessions.
