Why it lasts.

Solid linden with a non-toxic painted base, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. The rails are shaped rather than doweled, so there are no joints to work loose.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family building a farm or village scene, and it is the piece that makes the animals look like they live somewhere.
For the educator
It gives children a way to define space in a small-world setup, which supports sorting, grouping, and talk about inside and outside.
For the gift-giver
It makes a good add-on to a larger gift, and two or three together are more useful than one.

Ways to play.

Set two or three in a line and the farm animals suddenly have somewhere to belong. Curve them around a house and the scene becomes a garden. Children use fences to decide what is inside and what is outside, which is most of what small-world play is about.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

Most of the range is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. The posts on this fence are beech instead, which is harder and holds a thin upright better than linden would. The rails and the base are linden.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
