A pink bloom the size of a house, with a yellow center that opens. Nothing tells a child what is inside, and that is the whole design. It is the illustration of somewhere small living in a garden rather than a model of a building.

Why it lasts.

The petals are carved in overlapping layers rather than cut as one flat shape, which is what stops the flower reading as a painted disc. The whole piece including the leaves is cut from one block.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that wants a house on the shelf that is not a house shape.
For the educator
It anchors a garden or minibeast shelf, and the idea of living inside a flower is a good opening for talking about scale.
For the gift-giver
It makes a substantial spring gift, and it is the piece a child will show people first.

Ways to play.

The center opens, so there is a way in and out, and small figures spend as much time going through the flower as standing beside it. Stand it behind the mushrooms and the garden has somewhere to live in it. Set it alongside the toadstool house for a village of two.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
