A cluster of rounded coral columns in soft mint green, stacked in bulbs that get smaller toward the top. It is one of the few pieces in the ocean range that has height, which is what a reef needs before it looks like anywhere.

Why it lasts.

The bulbs are turned and sanded individually so each sits slightly differently on the one below it, which is why the piece does not read as a machined stack. The whole coral is cut from one block, so nothing can come apart.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family building a reef that needs shape and height rather than more creatures.
For the educator
It belongs in an ocean basket, and its rounded columns give children a clear contrast to the flat stony coral when sorting by shape.
For the gift-giver
It makes a good gift after a summer at the coast, and it pairs with the fish for a larger one.

Ways to play.

Set it beside the stony coral so the reef has both a ledge and a tower. The fish weave between the columns, and the crab climbs the base. Two or three of the corals together do more for an ocean scene than any single creature can.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
