Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. Most Halloween decorations last one October. This one comes back out every year, and it is carved well enough to leave on a shelf in November.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that wants a Halloween shelf worth keeping rather than a box of plastic that goes out with the recycling.
For the educator
It anchors a seasonal storytelling shelf in October, and its scale gives children a setting to build a plot around rather than a decoration to look at.
For the gift-giver
It makes a substantial autumn gift, and the witch, cat, and cauldron can be added to it one at a time.

Ways to play.

This is the piece the rest of the Halloween scene arranges itself around. Stand the witch at the door, put the cauldron out front, and set the cat prowling past the fence. Add the Halloween background behind it and the moon rises over the whole thing.

Materials & construction

Every Mako toy is cut to shape and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The wood is solid linden, chosen because it is light enough for a child to carry and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. Because each piece is finished by hand, the grain and the depth of color vary slightly from one to the next, and no two are exactly alike.

Finishes are non-toxic. Color is worked into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain still shows through, and where a piece is dark it is stained rather than coated.

The scenery is built as scenery. Houses and barns are shallow standing fronts rather than enclosed buildings, because they are made to sit at the back of a scene and give the animals somewhere to be. That shallowness is a design decision rather than a shortcut.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
