A triangle of fairy bread, 4.3 in along the long edge. If you have not met it, fairy bread is the Australian birthday party staple: a slice of white bread, buttered, covered in sprinkles, and cut into triangles. Every Australian child has eaten it and no Australian party is considered finished without it.

The felt version is a thick cream slice with a golden crust worked around the edge. The sprinkles are the detail worth looking at. Each one is a separate raised nub of felted wool standing proud of the surface in red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink and white, placed one at a time rather than printed as a pattern. You can feel them under a thumb.

Because the sprinkles go on individually, coverage differs noticeably from one slice to the next. Some come out dense and some scattered, and the colors land in a different order every time. Expect small differences in the size of the triangle too. What arrives will not be an exact match for the photograph.

We carry Playtisserie at My Toy Wagon partly because they make things nobody else does. Fairy bread is not something you will find in an American felt food range, and a child who has never heard of it will still understand it immediately, because it is bread with sprinkles on. It is one hundred percent merino wool sourced in New Zealand, colored with non-toxic dyes, felted by hand in Nepal, with every sprinkle worked into the wool rather than printed on a surface that could rub away.

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid sheet. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted by repeatedly working the wool with a barbed needle, which is how details this small are attached without glue or stitching. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and lay flat to dry. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since heat and agitation will shrink and harden it. Store it flat rather than under heavier toys, so the triangle keeps its shape and the sprinkles keep their relief. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
