Three juice boxes with the straws already in them: a green apple, an orange, and a purple grape. The straw is the part that makes it work. It is felted wool wound into a tube, bent at the top the way a real straw bends, and it stands up out of the carton rather than lying flat against it.

Each carton carries its fruit on the front, built rather than printed. The apple is a red felted shape with a stem and a leaf, the orange is a cut wedge with the segments picked out in white, and the grapes are separate felted balls with leaves behind them.

Because each one is shaped by hand rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences in the set of the straw, the size of the carton and the depth of the color. What arrives will not be an exact match for the photograph.

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. The straws are a small part, so this suits a child past the mouthing stage.

Why it lasts.

We carry Playtisserie at My Toy Wagon because they solve the problems other felt food ignores. A juice box is difficult to make well, since the straw has to hold its shape without a wire in it and without being so soft it flops. These are one hundred percent merino wool sourced in New Zealand, colored with non-toxic dyes, with the straw wound tightly enough to stand and bend on its own. There is no plastic and nothing rigid to snap off.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want pretend drinks that are not plastic cups, and three of them means a child can serve a table rather than just themselves.
For the educator
It supports a lunchbox or cafe corner and gives children three flavors to name, choose between and hand out, which is where the talking happens.
For the gift-giver
It arrives in a branded Playtisserie tote with three pieces inside, so it looks like a set rather than a single small thing.

Ways to play.

Three drinks is enough to set a table, which is a different scenario than a single piece supports. Somebody has to decide who gets the orange, and that decision is usually where the play starts.

They go into a lunchbox, onto a picnic blanket, or behind a pretend counter. Because the straws stand up, the boxes look right sitting on a shelf between play sessions rather than needing to be put away.

Details

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid form, which is how the cartons and the straws take their body. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted with a barbed needle, which is how the fruit is worked onto the front without glue or stitching. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let them air dry standing up. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since heat and agitation will shrink and harden it. Store them upright rather than with the straws pressed under heavier toys, since a bent straw will hold the crease. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.

Playtisserie I am Kim, the founder of Playtisserie. I am a mother and a registered dental practitioner with more than fifteen years in pediatric care, and that work taught me a great deal about how children communicate and how they thrive through interaction. I wanted to make beautifully crafted natural toys that invite creativity rather than direct it. Every piece in the collection is handmade from sustainable materials. We work closely with skilled artisans in Nepal, Vietnam and Indonesia, supporting those communities while making sure each item is finished with care. In a world where convenience often crowds out connection, we believe in pretend play. Quality, durability and sustainability guide what we make and how we make it.
