A lollipop on a stick, 5.9 in tall, with the head wound from a length of wool cord coiled flat into a spiral. The swirl is the coil itself rather than a pattern printed onto a disc, which is why it reads as a real boiled sweet from across a room.

Two colorways. The pink winds raspberry against lilac. The blue winds teal against yellow. They are different enough to read as different flavors rather than one sweet in two shades.

The stick is cream felted wool rather than wood or plastic, so it bends instead of snapping. Because each head is wound by hand, the number of turns and the tightness of the spiral differ from one to the next, and the heads come out slightly teardrop rather than perfectly round. What arrives will not be an exact match for the photograph.

Why it lasts.

We carry Playtisserie at My Toy Wagon because even their smallest pieces are made properly. This is one hundred percent merino wool sourced in New Zealand, colored with non-toxic dyes, felted by hand. The head is a two-color cord wound into a coil, so the spiral runs all the way through the piece and cannot rub off. A printed lollipop loses its swirl within a season of being carried in a pocket. This one does not have a surface to lose.

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted by repeatedly working the wool with a barbed needle, with different needle sizes used to shape and refine each part. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid form. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since heat and agitation will shrink and harden it. Store it standing in a jar or lying flat rather than with the stick bent under something heavy. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
