Three jars for a pretend pantry: honey in mustard yellow with a bee on the front, blueberry jam in lilac, and strawberry jam in pink. Each is topped with a scalloped felt cover banded at the neck, the way a jar of preserves gets covered with cloth and tied. The covers are part of the jar rather than lids that lift.

The honey dipper has a bee at the top of it, a small smiling face with white wings standing up behind. It lifts out of the pot and travels, and it is the detail a child finds first.

The fruit is built rather than drawn on. The blueberries are three separate felted balls standing proud of the jar with leaves behind them, and the strawberry is worked into the surface with its seeds picked out in white. The jars stand 3.9 in tall and 3.1 in across, close to the size of a real preserve jar, and the dipper is 5.9 in long so it sits in a small hand like a real utensil.

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. The removable honey dipper is a small part, so it suits a child past the mouthing stage.

Why it lasts.

We carry Playtisserie at My Toy Wagon because they build pretend food that comes apart and goes back together. Most felt spreads are a flat disc with a face on it. These are jars with lids that lift, and the honey has a dipper that leaves the pot. The wool is one hundred percent merino sourced in New Zealand and colored with non-toxic dyes, and every piece is shaped by hand rather than cut from sheet.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want a pretend pantry that looks like a real one on the shelf, and you would rather have three proper jars than a tray of molded plastic.
For the educator
It supports a dramatic play kitchen and gives children a reason to name and choose, since three spreads means a decision has to be made before anything gets served.
For the gift-giver
It arrives in a branded Playtisserie tote, and the lifting lids and removable dipper give a child something to discover rather than just unwrap.

Ways to play.

Set the three jars out and a child has a choice to make before anything else happens, which is usually where the play starts. The dipper travels, and it tends to end up in whatever else is on the table. It works alongside a felt sandwich or a tea set, and at this size the jars look right on a play kitchen shelf rather than lost on it. Small enough to live in a basket on a low shelf rather than a toy box.

Materials & construction

All Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted by repeatedly working the wool with a barbed needle, with different needle sizes used to shape and refine each part. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid sheet or form. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry flat. Keep it out of the washing machine, since wool felt shrinks and stiffens once it is agitated in hot water. Store the jars upright so the felt keeps its shape, and put the honey dipper back in the pot, since it is the piece most likely to go missing. The dipper is the slimmest part of the set and the one that will show wear first, so it is worth showing a young child how to hold it. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.

Playtisserie I am Kim, the founder of Playtisserie. I am a mother and a registered dental practitioner with more than fifteen years in pediatric care, and that work taught me a great deal about how children communicate and how they thrive through interaction. I wanted to make beautifully crafted natural toys that invite creativity rather than direct it. Every piece in the collection is handmade from sustainable materials. We work closely with skilled artisans in Nepal, Vietnam and Indonesia, supporting those communities while making sure each item is finished with care. In a world where convenience often crowds out connection, we believe in pretend play. Quality, durability and sustainability guide what we make and how we make it.
