Ships by late September. We will email you the moment it ships.

One wedge of watermelon, 3.9 in long and 3.1 in across, which is close to a real slice cut from a small melon. It is thick enough to stand on its rind rather than lying flat, and it has enough weight in the hand to be served on a plate.

The rind is the part worth looking at. Deep red flesh, then a pale line of pith, then dark green on the outside, each built as its own layer of wool rather than printed onto a flat piece. The seeds are black wool worked into the surface, not stitched on top, so there is nothing to peel.

The seeds are placed by hand and no two slices carry the same number in the same spots. Expect small differences in size and color depth as well. What arrives will not be an exact match for the photograph.

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. A single piece that suits a child just starting to set a table.

Why it lasts.

We carry Playtisserie at My Toy Wagon because a single piece of their felt food is made to the same standard as a full set. This is one hundred percent merino wool sourced in New Zealand, colored with non-toxic dyes, wet and needle felted by hand. Wool felted this way holds a solid form without a stuffing that shifts, which is why a slice this size keeps its shape after a year of being carried around.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want to add one good piece to a play kitchen rather than buy another set, and you would rather it were wool than plastic.
For the educator
It works in a dramatic play kitchen and on a fruit sorting tray, and at this size it is easy for small hands to pick up and pass.
For the gift-giver
It makes a small gift on its own with a Playtisserie swing tag attached, and it is an easy thing to add to a larger present.

Ways to play.

A single slice does different work than a set does. It goes on a plate, into a lunchbox, into a market basket, or into a picnic that a child is assembling from whatever is on the shelf. Because it is one piece rather than a matched collection, nothing about it has to be kept together, and it tends to turn up wherever the play is rather than staying where it was put.

Details

Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted by repeatedly working the wool with a barbed needle, with different needle sizes used to shape and refine each part. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid form. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry away from direct heat. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since agitation in hot water will shrink and harden it. Store it loose in a basket rather than pressed under heavier toys, so the wedge keeps its shape. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.

Playtisserie I am Kim, the founder of Playtisserie. I am a mother and a registered dental practitioner with more than fifteen years in pediatric care, and that work taught me a great deal about how children communicate and how they thrive through interaction. I wanted to make beautifully crafted natural toys that invite creativity rather than direct it. Every piece in the collection is handmade from sustainable materials. We work closely with skilled artisans in Nepal, Vietnam and Indonesia, supporting those communities while making sure each item is finished with care. In a world where convenience often crowds out connection, we believe in pretend play. Quality, durability and sustainability guide what we make and how we make it.
