Eleven pieces that come apart and go back together: two slices of toast, and between them lettuce, tomato, cucumber, cheese and ham. Nothing is attached to anything else, so the sandwich a child builds is the one they decided on.

The fillings are where the work shows. Each tomato is a thick red ring with a pale core and gold seeds embroidered around it, so it reads as a real cross-section rather than a red circle. The cucumbers carry a white embroidered star in the middle. The cheese is cut with holes through it, the lettuce leaf has a pale vein worked down its length, and the toast has a crust felted around all four edges.

The toast measures 4.7 in wide by 3.5 in long and every filling sits inside that footprint, so the sandwich closes properly no matter what goes in it. Because each piece is shaped and stitched by hand rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences in size, color depth and the placement of the seeds. What arrives will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The tomatoes and cucumbers are built up and embroidered by hand, which is why they carry detail that a stamped plastic slice cannot.

The set is a menu rather than a finished toy, so most of the play happens before anything gets eaten. Children order, assemble, and hand it over. Materials & construction

Playtisserie felt is designed in Australia and made from one hundred percent natural merino wool sourced in New Zealand. Each design begins as raw wool fiber, colored with non-toxic dyes before it is shaped.

Two techniques build the pieces. In needle felting, the fibers are compressed by hand and sculpted by repeatedly working the wool with a barbed needle, with different needle sizes used to shape and refine each part. In wet felting, water, soap and agitation mat the fibers into a solid sheet. Every piece is smoothed and trimmed by hand once it is finished.

Because each piece is shaped rather than cut to a pattern, expect small differences between one and the next in color depth, size and the placement of details. What you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph.

The work is done start to finish by artisans in Nepal. Full qualification takes close to three years of training, and eighty-five percent of the artisans employed are women.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let the pieces air dry flat. Keep wool felt out of the washing machine, since it will shrink and stiffen. Store the eleven pieces stacked flat in a shallow container so the thin slices stay flat rather than curling at the edge, and count them back in, since the cucumber slices are the ones that go missing. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
