Turn it over and the balls begin their slow fall down the spiral, tapping as they go. It sounds like rain starting. Children go quiet for it, and so, usually, do adults.

Age Recommendations

Recommended ages, in years. Sorted by the developmental window this toy opens, so it lands in the right season.

Why it lasts.

We carry Q Toys at My Toy Wagon because they finish wood to be felt rather than sealed smooth, and because they make under a Fair Trade scheme in Vietnam with a zero-waste principle behind the material choices.

Who it's for

For the parent
It is a calming toy that is genuinely calming, which is rarer than the category suggests.
For the educator
Useful as a transition signal, and as a listening exercise in its own right.
For the gift-giver
Beautiful enough to leave out, and the sound is the reason people pick it up again.

Ways to play.

Turn it and listen. Watch a single ball all the way down. Use it to mark the end of a noisy stretch of the day. Pair it with a story about weather.

Good Rattle, Not Instrument

This will be a Christmas present for my baby. From playing with it myself, it seems to be more of a rattle and less of a musical instrument. Calling it a "rain maker" is a stretch. I did not hear "a pitter patter of raindrops." The balls don't "cascade down," but they do respond well to shaking. Looks well made.

Beautiful Toy!

Wonderful toy! It is very well-made, the colors are vibrant, and we love watching the balls fall down. Great present for a one year old!

Lovely Toy

This has been on my wishlist for my baby girl since before she was born but it was out of stock everywhere! It didn’t disappoint upon arrival. The sound it makes is lovely and it is built beautifully. Being able to preorder it and know I would have it in time for her for Christmas this year was wonderful. As always the communication and customer service from My Toy Wagon was impeccable.

Details

Materials & construction

Handmade from solid, sustainably sourced plantation timber and finished with beeswax and natural oils, so the grain stays palpable under a hand rather than sealed smooth.

Made in Vietnam under a Fair Trade scheme. Q Toys work to a zero-waste principle and also make from the industrial byproducts of coconut and lychee trees.

Age & safety

Safety

Tested to ASTM F963, the US toy safety standard. Recommended for ages 3 and up. Ball colours vary.

Care & storage

Wipe with a dry cloth, or one barely damp. Do not soak, and keep it out of direct sun so the colours hold.

Because the timber is natural and the work is done by hand, grain, colour and size vary a little from piece to piece. That is the material showing, not a fault.
