Six hand-carved bird calls in a wooden box: mallard duck, little owl, skylark, lapwing, cuckoo, and turtle dove. Each one is tuned to mimic a real bird's song, and the illustrated instructions show you how to coax the right notes from every call.

Like any instrument, they take a little practice. Then one morning a bird answers back, and the outdoors is never quiet again.

Why it lasts.

We carry Quelle est Belle at My Toy Wagon because Monsieur François Morel has been carving bird calls in the Drôme region of France since 1980, tuning each one to the song of a real bird. These are true instruments that go to the lips, so for hygienic reasons they cannot be returned or restocked, and every set ships new in its wooden box.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want a screen-free reason to get outside, listen closely, and learn the birds by name.
For the educator
You are building a nature study or bird unit around a tool children can actually hear and answer.
For the gift-giver
You are giving the heirloom gift for a nature lover of any age, from young birder to seasoned twitcher.

Ways to play.

Learn one call at a time, matching your notes to the instructions until the song sounds right, then take the box on a morning walk, call, and wait for an answer. Sort the six by habitat, keep a list of the birds that reply, or play them in sequence like a small woodland orchestra. For a gentler start, there is the three-call Trio Country Garden set.

Details

Materials & construction

Each call is hand carved from natural wood and finished with non-toxic lacquers in the Quelle est Belle workshop in the Drôme region of France, where François Morel has been making bird calls since 1980. Background colors vary based on availability, so every set is one of a kind. The six calls arrive together in a wooden box with illustrated instructions.

Care & storage

Wipe with a dry cloth and keep the calls in their wooden box between outings. Because the calls go to the lips, they are not returnable and are best kept to one household. Keep them dry and out of long direct sun.
