This deer stands with its head up and ears turned, caught in the middle of listening. It has no antlers, just the clean line of the head and the long, slim legs, which gives it a softer, younger look.

It is hand-carved from a single piece of ash and finished with linseed oil and beeswax, nothing else, so the pale grain runs warm down its back. A leafy vine is burned along its shoulder by hand, with a small sprig on each leg and one tucked onto an ear, fine dark work you only find when you look closely.

At three and a half inches it sits easily in a child's hand and stands on its own on a shelf or a windowsill.

This deer is solid ash, finished with linseed oil and beeswax, with no paint and no varnish. The burned detail is drawn straight into the wood, so there is nothing on the surface to chip or wear away, and for a small piece it has a satisfying weight in the hand. It is the kind of thing a child keeps long after the toy basket has been emptied and refilled a dozen times.

Materials & construction

Every Tiny Fox Hole toy is hand-carved and hand-finished in a small family workshop from sustainably sourced solid wood, including linden, ash, beech, and birch. The natural grain is left to show, so each piece has its own character and no two are exactly alike. Where a piece carries a decorative motif, it is burned into the wood by hand, a technique called pyrography, never painted or printed.

Finishes are non-toxic and child-safe: water-based varnishes, pure linseed oil, and beeswax. Colorful pieces are treated with Biofa natural wax. All paints, color treatments, and sealants are certified to the European toy safety standard EN 71-3, which limits the migration of heavy metals if a toy is mouthed, chewed, or swallowed.

The designs draw on Montessori and Waldorf principles: simple, open-ended shapes that leave room for a child's imagination rather than dictating play.

Ways to play

This deer can stand on its own or join a wider forest scene. It pairs naturally with the Wooden Stag and the Wooden Fawn, and it sits just as well among real moss, stones, and bark for small-world play. Small and easy to hold, it is often the first one a young child reaches for, and it is handsome enough to leave out on a shelf or a nature table between games.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat to protect the wood and the linseed oil finish. If the surface feels dry over time, sand lightly with fine sandpaper and rub in a little pure linseed oil (raw, not boiled) or beeswax to bring the finish back. Store indoors somewhere dry. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
