A hollow felt mushroom with a round door at the base that opens: a home for whichever small creature the child decides lives there. The red cap is the one most children picture when they imagine a fairy mushroom, and it reads from across a room as a place where something lives. Open the door and the hollow interior is ready: enclosed, private, exactly the right size for a fairy, an elf, or a very small hedgehog. A wire frame in the doorway keeps the door opening cleanly and the whole mushroom standing on its own. Set it on a shelf and it is a beautiful object; set it on the floor and it immediately becomes a world.

Why it lasts.

We carry this because the red cap is the one children picture when they imagine a fairy mushroom: the version from every picture book, bold enough to read from across a room. The door opens, the interior is hollow, and the scale is right for the small creatures a child has already decided live inside it. Set it anywhere and a child knows immediately what to do with it.

Who it's for

For the parent
A felt mushroom with a hollow interior and a working door. The red cap is the bolder of the two colorways; it stands out in a small-world scene and reads immediately as the fairy mushroom children know from picture books.
For the educator
A felt mushroom home with a working door and a hollow interior. The red cap is visually distinct and anchors a small-world or woodland scene without additional context.
For the gift-giver
The red cap is the classic colorway: the one that photographs best, the one children point to immediately. Strong on its own; even stronger paired with the Brown Mushroom Hideaway as a woodland pair.

Details

Materials & construction

Each piece is made from 100% natural sheep's wool, sourced directly from Australia and New Zealand for its quality and purity. The wool is tested to the CE standard and colored with non-toxic, child-safe dyes. No synthetic binders, adhesives, plastics, or formaldehydes are used at any stage. The fibers are bound entirely through hand-felting: layers of wool pressed in warm, soapy water until the natural barbs lock permanently into a dense, resilient sheet. Every finished piece is hand-sewn without molds or machines.

Himalayan Felt Co. was founded by Lobsang and Miranda, who began traveling to Nepal to import felt and eventually opened their own dedicated factory there. Every piece is made by local Nepalese women, employed directly by the company: taught traditional felt-making skills, given a safe and family-friendly place to work, and paid a fair wage. Himalayan Felt Co. toys are CE marked and tested to the European toy safety standard, EN71. Because every piece is made by hand, slight variation in shape and color is natural and expected.

Ways to play

Open the door and decide who lives inside. Pair with the Felt Mushroom Hideaway, Brown to build a woodland village, each cap a different home. Arrange both mushrooms on a moss-covered surface, surround them with felt flowers and stones, and let children assign residents, relationships, and routines. Add Felt Bees, 3 pcs and a Felt Ladybug to the scene for seasonal detail.

Care & storage

Spot clean with a lightly damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Do not submerge in water, machine wash, or wring: the hand-felted fibers will shrink and lose their shape permanently if saturated. Air dry flat, away from direct heat and sunlight. Store in a dry place. Natural dyes may mellow gently over years of use; this is a characteristic of the material, not a defect.
