Dramatic Play

Social-Emotional & Pretend Play

Children rehearse the world before they live it. Hand-built farmyards, classroom markets, and harvest tables: the props for becoming.

Essay One  ·  Imagine and Become

Children learn the world by playing it first.

Before a child learns the price of bread, she weighs a felt loaf in a wooden scale. Before he understands a farm, he sleeps the calves in the shed. Dramatic Play is the toolkit for that prior learning. A farmyard with a real working tractor. A classroom market that opens at nine. A pantry where pumpkins live in baskets and rolling pins live on hooks. No batteries. No instructions. Just scene, prop, and the long generous space where a child practices being a person.

The Farmyard

Cows in the shed. Tractor in the field. The slow rhythm of care.

The Shop

Bread on the shelf, coins in the drawer, customers at nine.

The Pantry

Apples in the basket, cabbage on the cutting board, the kitchen as classroom.

In this section

Hand-built scenes and felt provisions for the social world, rehearsed in miniature.

Bring the cows in at dusk, latch the gate, check the calves once more. The farmyard runs on small, repeated acts of care.
