STEAMWonder & Investigation

Light, Color & Deep Time

Wonder is the first method. Magnetic tiles, light-table blocks, life-cycle sets, and the tools of looking closer, built for the questions children actually ask.

NGSS · Engineering Design Request an alignment letter Ages 3+ · Pre-K to Grade 5Card or invoice accepted Birch and German alder wood Faceted acrylic, magnetic tiles Maker spaces & light tables ASTM F963 · EN 71 Made in Lithuania, Germany, Austria, Bosnia, Nepal & China Connetix designed in Australia Net 60 & tax-exempt

Slow goods, on purpose. And one deliberate exception.

Zilvinas Stankevicius turns the kaleidoscopes himself in Lithuania. Bauspiel sets are assembled and checked in Augsburg, Germany by Uwe Deckelmann and his daughter Hanna, from components made across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria and Germany. The exception is Connetix, an Australian family company whose tiles are made in China. They are here because they are tested to ASTM F963, and because nothing else on the shelf turns flat into standing that fast.

Wonder comes before vocabulary. Then comes the question.

A child notices the way the amber catches the morning light. She turns the kaleidoscope. She turns it again. She has no word yet for refraction. She has only the question. STEAM, in this catalog, is the toolkit for that question. Birch kaleidoscopes. Magnetic tiles that arch into windows. Jewel-block geometry. A wooden microscope sized for a small hand. No batteries. No instructions. Just the long, generous space between the noticing and the naming.

Kaleidoscope & microscope

The first instruments, for looking closer.

Magnetic tile

Flat to wall to arch, a tower that stands.

Light table

Color through glass, and what happens where two colors overlap.

The slow look, and what a child keeps.

Kaleidoscopes · Featured

Kaleidoscopes of natural materials.

Hand-turned birch. Three palettes.

A child holds it up, turns the end, and the light rearranges itself. Nothing to switch on and nothing to break. Amber holds Baltic amber, Forest Magic recycled bottle glass, Blue Dreams stained glass, so three at a table see three results from the same turn and can say why.

Turned by Zilvinas Stankevicius in Lithuania, where he works in wood, amber, stone and glass.

Each barrel is 5.7 × 1.6 in. One kaleidoscope in your chosen palette, or all three as the Trio.

Connetix · The Education Range

Built for a classroom, not a living room.

Three sets, built around a different palette rather than a different size. The Mathematics tub is 186 pieces for $219, which is what three separate packs totalling 168 pieces would cost.

Mathematics

The color code they already teach with.

Fourteen colors, one per shapeBar sized to piece count

Follows the pattern-block convention already in the math cupboard: yellow hexagon, orange trapezoid, red triangle, magenta rhombus. A child who has sorted pattern blocks can pick this up and already know what the colors mean, which is why it drops into instruction a school is running now rather than asking for a new one.

The one tub a general classroom needs.

The eight-color Bright paletteThirty-four pieces each

Squares, windows, three kinds of triangle, quarter circles and open portals, so one tub covers construction, light study and pattern work without anyone deciding in September which of the three the year will be about. The even split is the point: every color can do every job.

Engineering

The only one with the clear run.

Bright, plus the clear fluted tubesThirty-two balls, four per color

The largest set, and the only tub that carries the clear fluted tubes, a release gate and thirty-two balls, four times what the Ball Run pack holds. A marble you can watch the whole way down is the difference between a child guessing why a run failed and seeing it. Ships as two stacking tubs, with printed build cards for four main builds.
