Thirty-two wooden tiles, face down. Somewhere in the grid, the penguin has a twin, and so do the tiger, the kangaroo with her joey, the crocodile, the whale, and eleven more. Turn two tiles. Remember what you saw. The child who finds the second panda first almost always remembers where it was because you turned it over three moves ago.
Memory is the rare game that children genuinely win against adults, fairly and often, because young memory for placed images is astonishing and largely unclouded by the grocery lists and passwords that crowd a grown mind. The tiles are solid wood with paw prints on the reverse, printed with a menagerie cheerful enough to name and talk about between turns, which is quietly where the language learning happens. Start with six pairs face down for the youngest players and grow the grid as they do.
